Union Lane: History & Heritage Legacy Mural

WeTheSeeds (Public Arts Placemaking UK) was commissioned by Wychavon District Council to research, engage, design and install 3 history & heritage, hand-painted large-scale murals in Driotwich Spa.

The process

When Wychavon District Council commissioned WeTheSeeds (Public Arts Placemaking UK) to create a heritage mural in Droitwich Spa, the goal was more than simply adding paint to a wall. It was an opportunity to celebrate the town’s identity and give residents a piece of public realm artwork they could truly connect with.

Droitwich Spa has a rich and unique story — from its world-renowned salt production and brine baths to its iconic radio towers. To uncover the details that mattered most, we carried out local research and hosted a community workshop, promoted through targeted Facebook ads and bespoke workshop materials. The free event invited residents to share their memories and highlight the aspects of the town they cherish most. Those conversations directly informed the mural’s design for Union Lane, ensuring it reflects the character, history, and voice of the community through the collage of community memories and stories.

Growing the seeds

The chosen canvas was the Union Lane site right outside the town’s train station, a long horizontal brick wall featuring three connected faces. The street art mural installation was completed using a combination of spray paint and traditional brushwork, blending bold, vibrant areas with detailed hand-painted elements to bring the design to life.

This approach transforms the wall into more than just a surface — it becomes a community co-created storytelling canvas, with the three faces working together to inspire movement towards the town centre & convey a shared visual narrative that reflects the history and identity of Droitwich Spa and the community that cherishes it.

Images of the final mural installation can be found below:

Throughout the project we captured photos and videos of the painting process, which we shared across social media to bring the community along on the journey!

As trusted Urban Hygiene applicators, we applied an Urban Hygiene anti-graffiti varnish to the mural.

This is a clear, gloss coating and does not affect the artwork, yet protects the artwork from vandalism. For more on this, click here.
