Penguin Books – Kate Atkinson Window Art Advertising Campaign UK

WeTheSeeds (Public Arts Placemaking UK) were commissioned by Penguin Random House UK (Transworld Publishing) to design and install 3 bespoke Window Art Advertising displays across the United Kingdom for Kate Atkinson’s latest novel Death at the Sign of the Rook.

The process

Pre-launch, our expert window design team worked with the original illustrations from Death at the Sign of the Rook to reformat each cover artwork for 3 booksellers’ window panels across the UK. We carefully deconstructed and re-imagined each of the sleeve illustrations to suit the shape and scale of every unique shopfront. Alongside the book title and author’s name, we prepared and presented the final 3 digital window design drafts to our client at Penguin Random House UK (Transworld Publishing).

After the digital window designs were approved, our skilled window artists travelled across the UK to hand-paint each design directly onto the booksellers’ windows. Following an 8-hour layering process at each site, we collaborated closely with each bookseller to ensure the final hand-painted window art faithfully reflected the approved digital designs to the highest standard.

The 3 campaign windows were completed in time for the launch of Kate Atkinson’s Death at the Sign of the Rook, combining public arts placemaking in the UK with creative book marketing, with installations at Waterstones (Emerson Chambers, Blackett St, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 7JF), The Edinburgh Bookshop (176 Bruntsfield Pl, Edinburgh EH10 4DF), and The Grove Bookshop (10 The Grove Promenade, Ilkley LS29 9EG).

In partnership with each bookseller, we executed strategic social media campaigns to promote the window art and enhance awareness of the book’s upcoming release across the UK over on our socials as stakeholder collaboration posts!

The window art is AMAZING! I also had emails from the booksellers to say how much they love the windows and how many lovely comments they’re getting on them as well. Great positive engagement and response from the community!
